Finally had the time last Sunday to take 2 hours of my time to do what I enjoy :)
This time round, there is some changes to my initial setup.
As usual, I used Nikon D7000, Nikon SB600 flash and Tamron SP90.
However, I ditched my new DIY diffuser and reverted back to the old one as the new diffuser still needs loads of work to get evenly soft light.
Also, added a battery grip to the camera and surprisingly enough, the added weight actually made pictures easier to capture handheld. Maybe because the weight is now more evenly distributed and now all focused at the front of the camera with the lens and diffuser pulling the camera downwards.
So, here are some shots from my outing.

i am an entomologist and your post is awesome its really very helpful for me
why didn't you use auto focus instead of manual one point focus ? i don't know but i think it'll be perfect if can take clear shots of the entire insect/bug :)
in macro, if wanna take 1:1 scale shots, auto focus is impossible because you have to adjust urself all the time. i am already using f/16 for the shots. DOF for macro is real small if ur at 1:1. to get all in focus, we cannot go 1:1 scale. or i can try stacking multiple shots with different area in focus but its hard because the insect will not stay still for you to take numerous shots :)
